Learning for Integration coordinates the Language Café, or Café Lingua, which is an international and intercultural language exchange event that takes place every week. We gather every week to practice speaking in different languages, with both Finns and foreigners living in the Helsinki region. The idea is to practice your conversation skills with both native and non-native speakers of the language, and to socialise and get to know both Finns and foreigners working or studying in Helsinki.
The event started as a smaller student event at the University of Helsinki in 2005, and since then many different organisations and people have participated in it from year to year. These days, there are people of all ages participating. The event is free of charge and anyone can join. At the moment, the meetings are in Café Mascot (Neljäs linja 2) in Kallio, Helsinki, every Monday from 7 pm onwards. There are usually 50-70 participants each week.
Beginning in August 2013, there will be a Finnish language tutor in Café Lingua to help the more than 30 Finnish learners who come to the event every week to practice Finnish. The Finnish tutor and material are funded by a grant by the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Suomen Kulttuurirahasto).
