Course Title: Exploring Our Environment – English for the Planet (B1-B2)

Course description:

This course focuses on English vocabulary and topics related to nature, sustainability, waste and recycling, climate change and climate awareness. The course covers a wide range of vocabulary on these topics. The emphasis of the course is expert vocabulary as well as discussion and interaction in English. The course includes an outdoor adventure day with an extra fee (40 EUR). 

Monday

  • 10:00 - 10:30: Welcome and Introduction

    • Overview of the course for the week, introductions, name game, and icebreaker.

  • 10:30 - 12:00: Discussion - Climate Change

    • Vocabulary introduction, reading activity on climate change, group discussion, and comprehension questions.

  • 12:00 - 13:00: Lunch

  • 13:00 - 13:30: Icebreaker

    • Fun activity to energize and promote group bonding.

  • 13:30 - 15:00: Debate - The Kyoto Protocol

    • Vocabulary on environmental treaties, reading about the Kyoto Protocol, preparing arguments for and against, and group debate.

Tuesday

  • 10:00 - 10:30: Welcome and Introduction

    • Quick recap, icebreaker activity.

  • 10:30 - 12:00: Vanishing Honey Bees

    • Vocabulary on environmental issues, reading about the decline in bee populations, group discussion, and comprehension activity.

  • 12:00 - 13:00: Lunch

  • 13:00 - 13:30: Icebreaker

    • Relaxing activity to refresh and connect with the group.

  • 13:30 - 15:00: Finnish Nature and Vocabulary

    • Vocabulary related to nature, reading and discussion of Finland’s unique ecosystems, followed by a comprehension exercise.

Wednesday - Nature Day

  • All Day (10:00 - 15:00): Outdoor Adventure Day Activity

    • This guided wilderness experience in southern Finland offers a combination of hiking, nature education, language training and hands-on outdoor skills, designed specifically for your group. The aim is to provide an enriching and enjoyable day in Finnish nature while learning about local flora and fauna, Everyman’s Rights, and Leave No Trace principles.  Discussions and interactive language tasks related to nature observations. NB. The walk is slow-paced and suitable for all.

    • Lunch: A traditional Finnish outdoor meal cooked over an open fire, accompanied by coffee and dessert.

Thursday

  • 10:00 - 10:30: Welcome and Introduction

    • Icebreaker and recap of the previous day’s outdoor activities.

  • 10:30 - 12:00: Ocean Garbage

    • Vocabulary on marine pollution, reading about ocean garbage, group discussion on its impact, and comprehension activity.

  • 12:00 - 13:00: Lunch

  • 13:00 - 13:30: Icebreaker

    • Light and fun activity to keep the energy up.

  • 13:30 - 15:00: Visit to Suomenlinna Island (UNESCO World Heritage Site). A short ferry ride to Suomenlinna, a fortress island with beautiful island scenery and historical sites.

Friday

  • 10:00 - 10:30: Welcome and Introduction

    • Icebreaker and discussion of the week’s learnings.

  • 10:30 - 12:00: Discussion - Food Waste

    • Vocabulary on food sustainability, reading about the global food waste issue, and group discussion.

  • 12:00 - 13:00: Lunch

  • 13:00 - 13:30: Icebreaker

    • Fun closing activity to engage everyone before the final session.

  • 13:30 - 15:00: Debate - Corporate Responsibility

    • Vocabulary related to corporate social responsibility, reading about companies’ environmental obligations, and a group debate.
