Course description:
This course provides practical strategies for educators working with migrant learners, helping them create inclusive, welcoming, and effective learning environments. Participants will learn how to organize language cafés and informal workshops that encourage communication and build confidence in a relaxed setting. The course will explore a variety of interactive techniques, including ice-breakers, games, and culturally sensitive discussion cards, to foster engagement and mutual understanding. Teachers will learn how to select and adapt culturally appropriate materials that reflect the diverse backgrounds of their students, promoting respect and inclusion. Additional methods such as storytelling, peer mentoring, and community-based activities will also be introduced. Participants will gain insight into trauma-informed teaching approaches to support learners who may have experienced displacement or other traumatic events. Through hands-on practice and real-life case studies, educators will leave the course with a toolkit of adaptable methods to meet the needs of diverse migrant groups. This course is ideal for language teachers, community educators, and volunteers committed to inclusive and empathetic teaching.
The course includes an optional outdoor adventure day in Finnish nature with an expert guide for a small extra fee (40 EUR).
